California imports over a billion dollars worth of shrimp each year.

Aquaculture has 40 years of consistent growth and represents the bulk of increased seafood production over that timespan.

2017 NOAA reports state that shrimp is the highest consumed seafood in the US, both in terms of quantity and value. National average annual consumption is 4.4 lbs/person and a total of 1.5 billion pounds. California consumption is about 40% higher than national average for a total around 250 million pounds consumption. The majority is imported from India, China, and SE Asian countries.
